Bacn Spotting Guide

Spam versus bacn. How can you tell the difference? It’s easy. An e-mail offering you an incredible deal on Viagra is spam, since you (probably) didn’t solicit it. Bacn is e-mail you asked for, and eventually want to read. Below are some examples of bacn:

An e-mail from an airline updating your frequent flier account

An e-mail from you favorite pet store announcing a sale on gerbil supplies

An e-mail from your local newspaper with a rundown of the day’s headlines

An e-mail from Facebook announcing that you have a new friend

An e-mail from your bank with your monthly balance

In the town near where I spent my summers at scout camp was a restaurant that some of the staff went to a few times a summer. They had one of those marquee signs that you can change the letters on and one day it said “COOK WANTEO.” It seems that they had run out of D’s and didn’t think we would notice. We were there for breakfast and on the menu was a side of “chrispy bacon.” I ordered it and so did Pat — one of my scouting idols. We joked about the spelling error through the meal and when leaving mentioned to the waitress to tell Wanteo that the bacon was nice and chrispy.

Somehow this has seemed much funnier for the past 20 years.
